In 1949, the 24th year of Showa, this monument was erected at the site of Dr. Hepburn's former residence (No. 39 in the Yokohama Foreign Settlements) in recognition of his achievements in the development of Japanese culture.
One of the missionaries that arrived in the port of Yokohama after its opening, he lived for three years at the Jyobutsuji Temple in Kanagawa.
Then he moved and settled here in the winter in 1862, the second year of Bunkyu.
His work included the translation of the Bible into Japanese, the compilation of the Japanese-English dictionary and dissemination of Western medical science.
